Dev-Diary: Dec14

Posted by SilverStitch - December 2nd, 2014

Hey everyone!

For a while now I've been posting monthly updates to deviantArt about my progress in game design. While it was less a way to inform the community of my progress and more a way to keep myself productive, I really grew to enjoying how it kept me constant and active, and I thought I would mirror my ways over to Newgrounds (since you guys deserve just as much love)!

So every month I'm going to link to the original post over at dA, and also leave a little tl;dr post here for those of you who don't want to travel across a single link. The reason I'm posting the larger entries over at dA (for now) is because of how it lets me post screenshots, but that may change~ ;)

[Dec14 Link]

Firstly, thank-you to everyone, especially everyone here at NG, for your amazing response to [Samantha Wins]! Thanks to all your views, reviews and votes I managed to get first place in the Halloween Games 2014 comp! <3

Secondly, I've already begun work on a new game. It will focus on adventure, exploration and free-running and hopefully will release in a few months (currenrly Feb-Mar). I'll post updates about it whenever I can! :)

Thanks everyone! Be happy~~

You can post multiple screenshots in an NG blog - is there something specific about the way DA does it that makes it easier / better?

Hey Tom!

The only real benefit is that dA handles the screenshots/images as a separate post. If you're trying to rush a post this can be annoying but other than that it can be beneficial. It lets you control title, description, comments and updates to the image, and then embeds that image into your journal. This allows for higher resolution viewing and for people to comment directly on the image, dividing your audience reception between journal readers and image viewers. I guess the NG version of this would be if you could embed your posted Art into your journal (though theoretically one could just insert their image into the post and then convert it to a hyperlink, right)? [Edit: Just did a little test: dA scales their images in the journal according to browser size while NG remains true to original image size.]
Don't take this as a comment against the NG journal posting system though! The main reason I used dA for the Dev Diary posts is that I (some-how) ended up getting into a habit of posting on dA, nothing else.

Thanks again for the Halloween Competition! <3

No offense taken, I just like being on top of the little details that can sway how people use / don't use NG. Letting you directly embed your art would be a handy feature, it's ALMOST tempting to auto-embed it when you paste in the URL, instead of using our smaller rich content link, but that might get crazy in some posts that want to feature a lot of art.

We're working on a new view tracking system and want to be able to track views even when they come from a feed - so for example, new art in your feed would appear at full size (the largest size possible in the feed layout), instead of as a rich content link. We would still track views, so people seeing your art in their feed would count as views of your art. The same could potentially apply to views in a forum or blog thread if we had embedding there as well.

Always happy to help and provide feedback! Newgrounds is always updating for the better and that's one of the things I love about it!
While we can already embed the preview-clips for movies, games, audio and art, a full-scale preview for the art would definitely have it's uses, especially if combined with this in-feed view tracker you're hypothesising. As for the other formats, it would be tricky, possibly unnecessary, to do the same with movies and games, and audio already has an in-feed viewer (though I'm not sure if that counts to views as you've described).
Good luck with the plans and updates Tom! :)
